Understanding the Wedding Process for a Smooth Transition into Married Life
Step 1: Decorate the car with festive decorations and set off to fetch the bride
The sight of cars adorned with red ribbons for weddings is quite familiar, isn't it? Along the way, whenever passing intersections, bridges, or encountering other wedding cars, firecrackers are lit. This practice is not only to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck but also to avoid conflicting celebrations which might jinx the couple. Additionally, about a hundred meters before reaching the bride's home, firecrackers are set off to notify the bride's relatives and friends that the groom is coming to fetch the bride. Any pranks or challenges for the groom and his groomsmen must be completed before the arrival of the wedding car!
Step 2: Alight and brave through the challenges to deliver the bouquet to the bride
Upon arrival at the bride's home, a younger relative, usually holding an apple or orange, is designated to open the door for the groom. The groom should touch the fruit and give a red packet containing a token of appreciation. Then, the groom can prepare to face the challenges and strive to deliver the bridal bouquet to the bride's hands!
Step 3: Pay respects to parents, veil the bride, and head back to the groom's home
After handing over the bouquet to the bride, if the bride's family follows the tradition of ancestral worship, it must be done first. Otherwise, the groom and bride kneel together to express gratitude to their parents for their upbringing. Subsequently, the bride's parents veil her, and the couple prepares to depart and head to the groom's home.
Step 4: Journey to the groom's home
The return journey to the groom's home mirrors the bride-fetching process. Firecrackers are ignited to notify the arrival, and when the bride alights, she, like the groom at the bride's home, touches the fruit offered by a younger relative from the groom's family and presents a red packet to receive blessings.
Step 5: Pay respects to the groom's elders, unveil the bride, and enter the bridal chamber
Before entering the groom's home, the couple must step over the threshold and then step on a tile before passing the stove. After paying respects to the groom's parents and ancestors, they can proceed to the bridal chamber, where the bride unveils herself.
Step 6: Proceed to the wedding banquet venue
After completing the wedding rituals, it's time to head to the banquet venue to enjoy the feast! Many Singaporean weddings feature a money box for guests to place their red packet blessings, as it's considered impolite to open the red packets on the spot. Additionally, it's customary to cheer "Yum Seng" (Cantonese pronunciation) loudly to bless the newlyweds, with the longer the cheer, the more auspicious it is considered.
