Is Your Jewellery Still Sparkling? Let’s Talk About Proper Care

You know that feeling when you walk past a jewellery shop full of sparkling treasures, and you just can’t help stopping to think, “This would look amazing with my outfit”? Before you know it, your jewellery box at home magically fills up more and more. Honestly, I’m the same—I love collecting necklaces, rings, and bracelets. But over time, these beauties start to darken, lose their shine, or even rust!

You might think, “Well, cheap jewellery just doesn’t last.” But that’s not true! Even expensive jewellery will lose its brilliance if not cared for properly. So today, let’s talk about how to keep your jewellery looking as dazzling as the day you bought it.

What Should You Avoid While Wearing Jewellery? Prevention Is Key.

Think about it—would you wear an evening gown to climb a mountain? Of course not. The same goes for your jewellery. Certain environments simply aren’t suitable for wearing your favorite pieces.

First, cosmetics, perfume, and cleaning products contain chemicals that are harmful to jewellery. If you like using perfume, spray it first, let the alcohol evaporate, and then put on your jewellery. This small habit can extend the lifespan of your pieces significantly.

Also remember to remove jewellery before going to hot springs, showering, or visiting the beach. The sulfur in hot spring water and the salt in seawater are both corrosive to metal—almost like soaking it in acid. Over time, your jewellery will definitely be damaged.

How Should You Store Jewellery? Proper Storage Is Everything.

The steps you take after wearing your jewellery matter more than you think. Just like cooling down after a workout, your jewellery also needs some gentle care.

For jewellery you won’t wear for a while, here’s a great tip: Wipe the piece with a soft cloth to remove sweat and oils. Then, use a cotton swab to apply a very thin layer of petroleum jelly to create a protective coating. Finally, store it in a ziplock bag to isolate it from air and slow down oxidation.

Also, never store different types of metal jewellery together. Harder metals can scratch softer ones, just like diamonds can scratch gold. Always store each piece separately.

Jewellery Dirty Already? Here Are the Best Cleaning Methods.

Different materials need different cleaning methods—just like different skin types need different skincare.

General Jewellery Cleaning

For most fashion jewellery, the cleaning process is simple: Mix mild dish soap with water, and use a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently scrub. Avoid hard-bristle brushes—they can scratch the surface. Dry with a soft cloth and your jewellery will look bright again.

K Gold Jewellery Requires Extra Care

K gold jewellery is plated, so never use silver polish or silver cleaning cloths. They can remove the gold finish, like bleaching a color photo. For daily care, simply use a glasses-cleaning cloth.

If your K gold jewellery has lost its shine, try a grandma-approved trick: Gently brush with baking powder using a soft toothbrush, leave for one minute, then rinse. You’ll be surprised how well it works!

Cleaning Tarnished Silver

Silver turning black is completely normal—it's a chemical reaction with sulfur in the air. Use silver polish or a silver-cleaning cloth to fix it. For more delicate silver pieces, use a high-quality silver cream for gentle cleaning.

For Extremely Stubborn Dirt

Toothpaste can help remove tough oxidation. Apply toothpaste with a toothbrush or cotton pad and rub in circles. For extra cleaning power, mix a bit of vinegar or lemon juice with it. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse.

If it still doesn’t work, you may need brass polish—but be careful. Wear gloves, and thoroughly wipe the jewellery afterward to avoid residue.

After Polishing? Post-Polish Care Matters Even More.

Polishing removes a thin layer of metal, making the surface more delicate—just like exfoliated skin needs moisturizer. Apply a layer of protective oil immediately to maintain shine and extend lifespan.

Special Care for Diamond Rings

If you own a diamond ring or other valuable jewellery, care is even more important. Diamonds are hard, but they’re not indestructible. A strong impact can still chip them. Remove them before showering, sleeping, or lifting heavy objects.

Diamonds attract oils easily, which dulls their shine. Keep them away from cosmetics, detergents, bleach, and hair products. For more information, see professional diamond care guides.

Professional Help Matters Too

While DIY care works, valuable pieces—like engagement rings or heirloom jewellery—should be checked professionally. Regular inspections at a service center help prevent damage and keep your jewellery gorgeous.
